Why study the Master of Media and Creative Technologies?

The Master of Media and Creative Technologies (MMCT) allows you to further your knowledge and skills in Screen and Media Studies, offered under the Te Kura Toi/School of Arts, School of Psychological and Social Sciences, School of Design, and Waikato Management School. The reason this qualification is popular both nationally and globally is that it not only provides students with a distinct edge in increasingly competitive media fields but provides the opportunity for you to become a leading practitioner and thinker ready for the challenges of the creative industries.

Alongside taught papers, you will work with our internationally-renowned media academic staff where, under their supervision, you will develop a portfolio of audio-visual projects. Areas you can explore include are, but not limited to: short film, documentary, animation, photography, AI, VR, scriptwriting, online content, podcasts, multimedia installations. Effectively, students take a lead in their learning, developing and producing creative works that showcase their distinctive voice ready for public exhibition and employment in numerous media-related fields.

Study under the MMCT will give you extensive collaborative project experience which is supported by technical expertise and advanced creative skills. You will also benefit from substantial grounding in postgraduate academic practice and the deployment of critical and methodological skills in original research.

This programme maintains strategic links with the broader Aotearoa-New Zealand community at a number of levels, and we have close links with Wt Workshop, Warner Bros. International Television New Zealand, Kirikiriroa-Hamilton City Council, and Waikato Regional Council. Graduates of the MMCT will:
  • bring an applied understanding of core academic concepts and principles at the intersection of media scholarship and contemporary technologies as media or creative professional
  • apply methods and techniques applicable to the production of original research examining and/or exploring creative technologies
  • evaluate the parameters and form of creative processes employed within contemporary media technologies to understand their form, function and impact
  • identify, frame and resolve research questions specific to our ever-evolving media cultures and ecologies
  • ability to critically evaluate global markets and trends in this field and maintain domestic and visual sovereignty when required
  • develop core literacies in aesthetic understanding, formal properties and creative research techniques to be able to critically evaluate, interpret, deconstruct and construct media at an advanced level.
  • develop cogent methods of argument and make sound judgements in accordance with advanced knowledge of research and practices associated with the field
  • effectively communicate research findings and analyses via a variety of presentational forms
  • effectively communicate research findings and analyses to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • translate and apply intellectual concepts and research design principles in a wide range of employment contexts that employ media
  • the ability to conceive and realise creative works to a professional standard in a chosen aesthetic form and/or media technology
