PHILO305
According to the dominant conception of God in Western philosophy of religion, God is a person (without a body) who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent (morally perfect), and who creates and sustains all (else) that exists. This course explores a range of problems with this 'personal-omniGod' conception. For example, does petitionary prayer make any sense? Could it make any difference to what happens in the world? Is being all-powerful compatible with being perfectly morally good? What's the relationship between God and morality? If God (fore)knows our future actions, can we be free? Is horrific suffering good evidence against the existence of God? Is the existence of hell compatible with the existence of God? Does the idea that Jesus is (was) both fully human and fully divine make sense?
