Graduates will have advanced understanding and knowledge across a range of aspects of education. They will also understand:

  • A selected range of underlying concepts and principles associated with the theory and research of education;
  • The main methods of enquiry used in the study of education;
  • A range of approaches to solving problems in education; and
  • A range of research approaches used in education research.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the capacity for self-directed study and the ability to work independently;
  • Plan and carry out, to internationally recognised standards, original research or scholarship to a master's level;
  • Understand and evaluate new knowledge and ideas in education;
  • Use educational concepts and principles appropriately in a particular range of educational contexts;
  • Develop lines of argument and make sound judgements in accordance with current theories and concepts in a specific area of educational practice;
  • Present, evaluate, and interpret relevant research data;
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, arguments, and analyses in a variety of forms, to professional and non-professional audiences.

Graduates will have the qualities necessary for employment requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making in professional educational contexts. In particular, graduates will have the following attributes:

  • Confidence to make reasoned and informed decisions in complex educational contexts;
  • Commitment to on-going professional learning;
  • Self-direction and originality in tackling and solving a range of problems that can arise in education contexts;
  • Confidence to act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks in their educational practice;
  • An appreciation of the uncertainty, ambiguity and limits of knowledge;
  • Awareness of the ethical issues and responsibilities related to Education and education practice.

Structure of the Master of Education Programme

The requirements of the Master of Education are 180 points including:

  • at least 30 points from List A of papers
    • up to a further 90 points from List A and B
  • one of the research methods List C papers; and
  • one of the research paper options of List D

30 points may be taken from outside the field of the degree.

In order to be eligible for consideration for the award of honours, the requirements of the degree must be completed in two years of full-time study or four years of part-time study from the date of first enrolment in the degree - please see the MEd Regulations.

There are normally three options regarding how study can be planned.

  • Option 1: 30 points Dissertation (EDUCA591)
  • Option 2: 60 points Dissertation (EDUCA592)
  • Option 3: 90 points Thesis (EDUCA593)

Further study options

Graduates who complete a Master of Education with First Class or Second Class Division honours will be eligible to be considered for enrolment in a Doctor of Education.
