ࡱ> 8_7] bjbj\\ 46i6i KKKKK____s_(n$FHHHHHH$lK000lKK0KKF0F F.20 tL  K,0000000llF0000000 000000000Y : ALPSS HUMAN RESEARCH ETHICS COMMITTEE PRINCIPLES FOR THE ETHICAL SCRUTINY AND APPROVAL OF RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS IN COURSES Approved September 2020 The principles that the Committee applies in dealing with the ethical scrutiny and approval of student research in courses where a number of research projects or exercises are undertaken by a number of students, separately or in groups, are as follows: a) The lecturer should provide the Committee with information about the course, semester taught, etc. and information on the types of research that students are likely to undertake as part of course assessment a copy of the Paper Outline should be attached; b) The lecturer should also provide the Committee with an indication of how issues in research ethics are taught in the course; c) The lecturer needs to provide students with a copy of the current regulations on human research ethics ( HYPERLINK "http://calendar.waikato.ac.nz/assessment/humanresearchethics.html" http://calendar.waikato.ac.nz/assessment/humanresearchethics.html) and the Facultys application format ( HYPERLINK "http://wfass-trinity.fass.waikato.ac.nz/docushare/dsweb/View/Collection-54" http://wfass-trinity.fass.waikato.ac.nz/docushare/dsweb/View/Collection-54); the Committee also encourages lecturers to provide models of information sheets and consent forms for interview, questionnaire, observation and other relevant research methods. d) Students should be advised in the relevant assignment information that they must not collect any information from human subjects until they have been given approval to do so; e) Delegation of ethical approval may be given to the course lecturer, often in conjunction with a current or past member of the ALPSS Human Research Ethics Committee; f) Any research with complex or controversial ethical aspects, or where the lecturer is unsure about what is ethically responsible or appropriate, should be referred to the Committee for approval; g) A summary of the topics and the types of research methodologies used in approved student research projects should be provided to the ALPSS Human Research Ethics Committee at the end of the course; h) The Committee may delegate ethical approval under these conditions for up to three years, unless changes are made to the relevant assignments/research projects or the way in which research ethics are dealt with in the course, or unless the staff teaching the course changes. After three years, application should be made again to the Committee, if only to confirm that the same arrangements are in place by the resubmission of documentation.
